WHO - Insecticide-treated nets for malaria transmission control in areas with insecticide-resistant mosquito populations: Preferred product characteristics [2021]

Description:

The document describes the preferred product characteristics of new types of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) to control malaria transmission in areas with insecticide-resistant mosquito populations. The document was developed to address the public health need caused by the evolution and spread of insecticide resistance, particularly to pyrethroids. Such resistance threatens the effectiveness of the current standard of malaria vector control in many countries, namely pyrethroid-only long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs).

Why this Tool/Guidance?

Information provided is useful to support the development of safe and effective insecticides for use in ITNs. It is anticipated that product developers and researchers will draw on this information to develop a range of target product profiles to guide the development of specific products.
