Description:

The document has been developed as part of a WHO technical series on artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) and health and addresses health considerations when developing a national action plan (NAP) as required under the Minamata Convention on Mercury. Divided in to two sections it provides an overview of (i) how and where health considerations should be taken into account as part of the wider process of developing or articulating a NAP; and (ii) the development of the public health strategy that needs to be included as a specific component of the NAP.

Why this Tool/Guidance?

Information provided is useful to guide health ministries in planning measures to implement the health-related articles of the Minamata Convention and to protect public health from exposure to mercury. The document is also of interest development partners (e.g. UN agencies and international organizations), researchers and non-government organizations.
