The document provides a practical introduction to mercury waste storage and disposal from healthcare facilities. Overview information is provided on (i) clean-up of small mercury spills in a healthcare facility; (ii) temporary onsite storage; (iii) packaging, labelling and transport; and (iv) intermediate storage at a central facility. It is aimed both at technical staff in a healthcare setting and government bodies.
Why this Tool/Guidance?
Information provided may be useful to support local or national governments in developing plans and infrastructure for the packaging, off-site transport, and intermediate storage of mercury at central facilities and is aimed at countries where national norms and guidelines for clean-up, storage, and transport of mercury waste do not exist at this time. The document may be used for training purposes.
