Information is provided on the design of a survey for assessment of prenatal exposure to mercury using human biomonitoring. Guidance is available on (i) survey design; (ii) recruitment and fieldwork; (iii) biological material; (iv) data management and analysis; (v) community involvement strategy; and (vi) ethical considerations. An informed consent form, eligibility screening form and a questionnaire for collecting epidemiological information are also included in the protocol.

The document aims to guide countries who wish to monitor human exposure to mercury. It provides support and advice for the planning and implementation of human biomonitoring surveys for mercury at national, regional and international levels.
