ILO: Code of practice - Ambient factors in the workplace (2001)

Description:

The provisions of this code should be considered as the basis for eliminating or controlling exposure to ambient factors, including hazardous airborne chemicals. It places emphasis on the role and obligations of competent authorities, the responsibilities of employers and the duties and rights of workers and others with regard to the prevention of illness and injury to health due to hazardous ambient factors in the working environment. It deals with:

  • Setting up of legal, administrative and practical procedures and frameworks for the assessment of hazards, risks and of control measures.
  • Aims of and mechanisms for identifying and eliminating or controlling the hazard or risk from hazardous ambient factors.
  • Surveillance of workers’ health and of the working environment.
  • Provision of information and training to workers.

The practical recommendations of this code of practice are intended for the use of all those who have the responsibility for the protection of workers’ health against hazardous ambient factors. The code is not a legally binding document and is not intended to replace national laws, regulations or accepted standards. Its provisions are considered as the basic requirements for the protection of workers’ health against hazardous ambient factors and are not intended to discourage competent authorities from adopting higher standards. More stringent national or international regulations have priority over these recommendations.
