ILO: Safety and Health in Mines Convention (No. 176) and Recommendation (No. 183), 1995

Description:

Convention No. 176 includes provisions for protecting the safety and health of workers in the mining sector, including risks posed by chemical hazards such as mercury. The main provision addressing chemicals is Article 9, which mandates that employers must:

  • Inform workers of existing chemical hazards and all relevant preventative and protective measures for these hazards.
  • Take appropriate measures to eliminate or minimize those hazards.
  • Provide free protective equipment in the event that safety cannot otherwise be ensured.
  • Ensure provision of first aid, transportation and appropriate access to medical facilities for workers suffering from injury or illness due to chemical hazards.
