Be aware of the GHS classification system

The GHS ensures appropriate handling, use and storage of hazardous substances to prevent hazardous chemical exposures in the workplace. Correct classification and labelling, as well as comprehensive worker training, can help improve OSH and workplace safety systems.

The GHS classifies chemicals based on their intrinsic properties. These include:

  • Physical hazards: There are 17 classes of physical hazards, including explosives, flammable liquids and gases under pressure.
  • Health hazards: There are 10 classes of health hazards, including acute toxicity, carcinogenicity and skin corrosion/irritation.
  • Environmental hazards: There are 2 classes of environmental hazards – hazardous to the aquatic environment and hazardous to the ozone layer.

Hazards in the GHS are communicated through labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
