Apply the Hierarchy of Controls
Employers should take appropriate measures to protect workers against the risks identified by the assessment of risks. The Hierarchy of Controls is a system used to eliminate or minimize exposure to occupational hazards, such as chemicals. There are five categories in the hierarchy:
- Elimination
- Substitution
- Engineering controls
- Administrative controls
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
Control methods at the top of the hierarchy (elimination) are potentially more effective than those at the bottom (PPE). Elimination and substitution should be considered priority actions where possible, with PPE only used as a last resort.
