Description:
The guidance document describes simple analytical techniques for the identification of substances commonly involved in acute poisoning incidents. These techniques do not need sophisticated equipment or expensive reagents, or even a continuous supply of electricity, and can be carried out in the basic laboratories that are available to most hospitals and health facilities. The document provides overview information on (i) apparatus, reference compounds and reagents; (ii) clinical toxicology; (iii) sample collection and storage; and (iv) qualitative tests for poisons. Finally analytical and toxicological data is provided for a range of chemicals.

Information provided is useful to support the setting up of analytical toxicology services, including for diagnosis of pesticide poisoning. The guidance is appropriate for authorities with limited facilities.
