Description:
The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) is a global treaty to protect human health and the environment from persistent organic pollutants such as dioxins and dioxin-like substances. POPs remain intact in the environment for long periods, become widely distributed geographically, accumulate in the fatty tissue of humans and wildlife, and have harmful impacts on human health or on the environment. The web site provides detailed information on (i) the mandate of the Convention; (ii) a list of POPs subject to the treaty; (iii) chemicals proposed for listing in the treaty; and (iv) implementation of the treaty including regulation of export and import of the listed POPs. Links to relevant technical guidelines are also provided.
